M’SIYA NEWSOME

I did my usual schedule at work of the morning news and the mid-day news. Usually by the time I was done with both, it would be time for me to pick up Taylor. Twan called asking if he could take Taylor out. Since our family conversation, he had been trying to make things better where Taylor came into play. For her, it was the little things that counted. I found myself home alone, catching a few z’s since I had the house to myself. I had been running myself so ragged with work and this whole single parent thing that I was running on E most days. I found myself falling asleep anytime I had a free moment. I honestly was knocked out until Twan brought Taylor back home.

The sounds of my doorbell and my Ring going off woke me. You know you were having some good sleep when you woke up drooling and what not. I grabbed some tissue, wiping my mouth and face before opening the door. As I pulled the door back, I asked Taylor where her key was. She told me she left it here. She came inside, and I noticed Twan wasn’t turning around to leave. Instead, he asked if he could come inside to talk. I was a little against it because, sir, we barely talk outside of pick-ups, so why are you trying to come inside my house? I thought all of that just to agree to him coming in.

He came in and sat in the dining room, helping Taylor with her homework. By the time she was done, they sat with each other until Taylor got on the phone with one of her friends, causing her father to come and sit in my face. Silence met us both, and it stuck around until he decided to say something.

“You got a nice place.”

Dryly, I accepted the compliment. “Thanks.”

“Still not used to the whole y’all over here and me still there.”

I looked at him, confused. “Well, you should be. We’ve been over here without you a little over a year now.”

“That doesn’t mean anything. I didn’t like the idea of you leaving then, and I still don’t like it.”

“I guess it’s a good thing we’re no longer married.” I shrugged.

“Is it?”

“Twan, why are you here? We both know it wasn’t for homework because that has always been my thing.”

“I wanted to talk to you,” he admitted.

“About what?”

“About this.” He gestured around the house. “About us.” He pointed between me and him.

“There is no us with me and you. Just like spades, there’s a us which is me and Taylor, and then there’s them. That them is sadly you and Cashay.”

“Damn. Our family don’t mean shit to you?”

“Excuse me, but that whole family idea folded when you insisted on a divorce.”

“You signed the papers, M’siya.”

“That you gave me, Twan. If I didn’t have any papers, there wouldn’t have been a divorce. Simple as that.”

With a hurt demeanor, he asked, “Is that your way
